Neooffice reviews3/31/2023 ![]() ![]() I personally haven't tried a copy yet (I already - unfortunately - sunk money into Office 2004), but I'm willing to bet with some of the java benchmarks we've seen on Intel Macs, this suite will run pretty well if you have Intel inside. NeoOffice is also selling Early Access subscriptions for $60, which will offer (what else) early access privileges throughout the course of NeoOffice 2.x releases. After that, it goes back to free like it's always been. From August 15th through 29th, the price drops to $10. From now until the 14th of August, users can download a copy of 2.0 Aqua for a mere $25. The Early Access Program is, in my opinion, a really cool and clever way to bring in some money for the project's hard work (after all, this entire project is made up of volunteers, and somebody's gotta pay the bills). Moreover, NeoOffice can integrate with the Finder and Mail, which was probably one of the winning attributes that warranted the 'Aqua' addition to the name. NeoOffice, however, offers advantages over running OpenOffice on Mac OS X because it doesn't need the X11 Unix environment to run. This new version is based on a recent version of OpenOffice (2.0.3), which includes apps for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, drawing and presenting. Interestingly, it includes scaled-down "junior" versions of each of its major applications for faster, easier use with basic documents.NeoOffice, everyone's favorite implementation of OpenOffice in java, has released a v.2 beta of their suite with a new and improved Aqua-friendly interface. Its dizzying array of applications includes an Outlook workalike, a drawing program and utilities such a PDF editor and a backup application. My favorite in this group was ONE Special Edition from E-Press Corp for $70. I started with suites that I either had not previously heard of or had not tried. Did any of them have the right chemistry? Read on and see. I tried out six contenders: E-Press ONE Special Edition, Celframe Office Pro, ThinkFree Office, GoBeProductive, Corel WordPerfect Office and OpenOffice. The whole package has to be less expensive than Office 2007, but it also must have the feel of being developed by professionals rather than just being a side project by some eager young programmers. An Outlook-like program would be a big plus. At a minimum, I need a word processor, a spreadsheet and presentation program, all of which must be reliably compatible with Microsoft Office formats. So once again, I went out looking for a new office suite.Īs I began my search, I inventoried my requirements. well, there were a few more small things like that. And the word processor's lack of a grammar checker. And, of course, the price was right: free.īut soon, a few things began to rankle - like the way it always started in WYSIWYG mode, even when loading a file I had most recently edited in Web mode. The OpenOffice family is a delight - a dedicated group of open-source developers. It did virtually everything Microsoft Office did, plus it came with a database program, something that would have jacked up the price of Office even more. At the time, I switched to OpenOffice, which I initially liked quite a bit. Office was beautiful and powerful, but I was uncomfortable with the family.įortunately, there are a lot of fish in the sea, most of which are available in downloadable trial versions. Plus, there was the Microsoft issue: I felt like I was dating Meadow Soprano. I left Microsoft Office 2003 two years ago because of a few interface inconsistencies and a gnawing sense that there had to be something better. Sometimes, it's not one big issue that causes a relationship to go sour but, rather, an accumulation of small irritations. ![]() ![]() ONE Special Edition, Celframe Office Pro, ThinkFree Office, GoBeProductive.Moving into a new office suite Office alternatives: ![]()
